Scientlogists creep me out

will_scientologist.jpg

I have no facts to back any of this up, other than watching that creepy and somewhat crazy Tom Cruise Scientology video. However, I am creeped out to no end by Scientology. It’s something in the eyes. The lack of blinking. Like tiny windows into an abyss that threatens to absorb us all into midnight nothingness. Of course, I get the same feeling from hardcore Apple fans. So, never mind me. I’m just here looking at this photo of Will Smith hanging out with that old queen Tom Cruise, wondering if Big Willie Style has anything to do with Lord Xenu and does it even matter?

Just random thoughts, nothing to see here.

Metal Gear Solid & Lupin III

Like chocolate and peanut butter, Metal Gear Solid and the Lupin theme go together with sexy deftness. With lots of nods to Metal Gear game traditions and created with Microsoft Paint, this little gems goes down smooth with only a mild sense of nerdy guilt. The original (2002 version) Lupin intro after the break.

The final Dark Knight trailer is here, and so is the next Bat-Villain!

batmanjoker.jpg

Warner Brothers has released the second and final trailer for its summer smash hit sequel, The Dark Knight. I must say, it makes me excited and sad at the same time. Excited to see the film, but saddened to know that Heath Ledger is no longer with us. However, there is still a laundry list of villains in the Dark Knight’s rogues gallery. In much the same vein as the last film, the ending to this film will bring us Batman’s newest foe. If you want to be surprised, then I suggest you read no further. Otherwise, click the link below to see the next villain!

Rest in Peace Jeff Healey

jeffhealey.jpgJeff Healey passed away March 2nd, succmmbing to cancer. He was 41. The Toronto native was known around the world as a first class blues and jazz musician, making a name for himself as The Jeff Healey Band. The band released their first album, See The Light, in 1988. The masses got their first look at Jeff as “Cody” in The 1989 cult classic Road House, starring Patrick Swayze. Healey’s story is one of triumph over tragedy. After losing his eyes at the age of eight months to cancer, Jeff took up the guitar at the age of three. Jeff’s unique style of playing (sitting the guitar on his lap flat) and bluesy tones developed from his love of musicians like Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, as well as the great Stevie Ray Vaughn. He had the chance to play with Vaughn on several occasions before his death. His band enjoyed a strong and loyal fan base for his entire career. In recent years, Healey turned to playing classic jazz, incorporating the trumpet into his repertoire. Jeff Healey’s final battle with cancer began in January of 2007, after having tumors removed from his legs. His last album, Mess of Blues, will be released next month. It is his first rock album in eight years. His death serves as tragic irony, as close friend and Road House co-star Patrick Swayze announced this week that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Swayze says that his prognosis is good, and plans to fight it every step of the way. Rest in peace, Jeff. Get well, Patrick.

Review: Cloverfield

film_cloverfieldRelease: January 18, 2008
Directed by: Matt Reeves
Written by: Drew Goddard
Genre: Action/Horror/Monster
Rated: PG-13
Country: USA

Review:

I managed to know very little about Cloverfield before it was released. The few bits of information regarding the movie that I had picked up previous to viewing it yesterday were as follows.

1. It has a monster in it. The monster is mysterious. It smacks the head off the Statue of Liberty and into the streets of Manhattan.

2. There are littler monsters. They look like the bugs in Starship Troopers.

3. Something about “Slusho!”.

4. Twenty-somethings at a party. Handheld camera. Possibility of motion sickness.

I assumed that keeping myself in the dark as far as the vast viral marketing campaign unfolded might make the movie more fun for me. The less I know going into a movie of the sort that Cloverfield looked to be, usually the better. If you feel the same way and have yet to see the movie, stop now. Everyone else…here’s what the movie is about.

I killed Heath Ledger

heath_ledger_dead.jpgI feel it’s probably my fault that Heath Ledger is dead. I’ve always maintained that his best work had yet to arrive. Once it was announced that Ledger would be the new Joker people balked, but I clearly saw the potential of a stellar performance. Once the first images of the Joker and the first The Dark Knight teaser hit the theaters it was clear that Ledger was the Joker and Nicholson was merely a place holder. Today, January 22nd, 2008 Heath Ledger was found dead. Probably and an overdose, definitely a calamity in regards to what he could have brought to movies. The Dark Knight is now just a little bit darker. Which in some bizarre way is my fault as anything I’ve remotely liked typically stumbles into an early grave. Firefly, Quantum Leap, Arrested Development, Greg The Bunny, Futurama, The George Lopez show, The Tick and so on… However, in this case the chance of direct to DVD release will hardly fix the situation.

Either way, I’ll miss the guy. 28 years old is too young to appear in an obituary.

HD DVD going the way of Betamax? Has Blu-ray won the format war?

bluray.jpgWarner Bros. studios have announced that they are officially backing the Blu-ray DVD format for their future releases. With Disney solidly in their corner, and New Line following suit, it is looking more and more like Blu-ray is here to stay. “A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry,” announced Warner president Kevin Tsujihara. Unless Toshiba and Microsoft come to some sort of deal, it looks like their HD DVD brand might be phased out altogether.

Smile, there’s a new Dark Knight trailer!

tdk.jpg

Warner Brothers has released the newest Dark Knight trailer online. I must say that I am really liking what I am seeing so far. I was slightly skeptical with the casting of Heath Ledger as The Joker, but this trailer leads me to believe that he may be the right man for the job after all. His manic nature, cruel expression, emaciated appearance, and drooling lunacy are drawing me in.

Print is dead, thanks to Kindle

kindle.JPGAmazon.com has taken the next step to making the printed page obsolete. Their new device, called Kindle, is a portable one stop shop and storage unit for the latest bestsellers, magazines, blogs, and newspapers. Kindle is completely wireless, about the size of a dime paperback (weighing in at 10oz), and can store thousands of pages of material. The price of the average wireless novel purchase is $9.99 (more than 50% off the average print bestseller price), and users do not need a computer to run a Kindle. It also has key features such as an MP3 player for some background reading music, search and bookmarking tools, and access to a dictionary and Wikipedia. The device costs $399, and does not require any sign-up for service. It looks like Inspector Gadget was right, because computer books are no longer fiction.

Grape stomp face plant

Hilarious footage of a TV reporter (on the left) filming a segment about a festival being held at a local vineyard. The woman on the right is explaining the weekend’s events while the two ladies stomp grapes. The TV reporter tries to be cute and cheat, leading to a hysterical accident that sounds even worse than it looks.

Zune Orginals: music for both ears and eyes

zune_original_group.jpg

There’s no doubt about it, Microsoft is serious about the Zune. In it’s newest iteration, the Zune has truly become a thing of beauty. From the choice in colours to the design and user interface, everything works harmoniously and artistically. Now couple that with the Zune Originals site, which allows you to customize the aluminum backing of your Zune 4, 8 or 80. For a limited time you can get these customizations for fee with your purchase of a Zune from the Zune Orginals site, meaning that buying sooner saves you cash. Safe to eat New Jersey Squirrels again

dead_squirrel.jpg

Good news for folks living in the Garden State, it is once again safe to eat squirrels. Oh sure, there was that nasty scare involving a toxic waste site, squirrels and the fear of lead toxicity, but it was all for naught. It was a false positive caused by a faulty blender used in the testing of squirrel tissue samples. Hunters and urban survivalists (aka homeless people) can once again dine on man’s favourite rat.

X Files sequel, stat!

thumbnailIt seems the rumors of another X-Files movie have turned up legit. Variety has confirmed that a second film is in the works and will in fact reunite the original flummoxed duo in a storyline unrelated to the main plotline of the show and first film. It sounds like a big-budget episode, which may work pretty well. Thing is…it’s scheduled for release on July 25th, 2008. So, they just finished the script and now they’ve got T-eight months to bang the thing out and get it into theaters? Hrmm…I like my movies like I like my pot roast: put together by loving hands, slow cooked for as long as possible, and served with a side of green beans. This production is distinctly lacking in both the slow cooked and beans categories. Also, how much interest is still out there in another film? Are there enough people out there ready to line up for another outing? Especially one that was put on the ultra-express train to the cineplex? We shall see. Anyway, I personally think Mulder and Scully’s best storyline as already been told.

Dumbledore gets outed by Rowling

dumbledore3.jpgDuring a stop in New York, Harry Potter creator JK Rowling dropped a bombshell on an audience of thousands at the famed Carnegie Hall. Rowling, on her first book tour in America since 2000, shared that beloved Wizard Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, is gay. After a series of gasps and applause, the author revealed that Dumbledore had a crush on rival wizard Gellert Gridelwald, whom he later defeated in a battle between good and evil. “Falling in love can blind us to an extent,” said Rowling, and the episode left Dumbledore feeling ”horribly, terribly let down.” For years, fans of the series have questioned the sexuality of Dumbledore, as he had no close ties to women with the exception of his sibling-like relationship with professor Minerva McGonnagall. Rowling believes that this revelation will give radical Christian groups more fuel for their campaign against the series, and she is just fine with that.

Another day, another Dune

Hi, I'm Peter Berg! YOU'RE MINE!When I was 12 years old I picked up a copy of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” because it’s supposed to be “one of the monuments of science fiction” and generally one of the best damn things since sliced pie. I hated it. I hated it because I was 12, and who would win in a fight between the geopolitical ramifications of resource starvation within a galactic economy and a TIE fighter? (hint: it’s the one with the lasers). So, after having tossed the book over my shoulder with a “Pfft, ain’t no F@%&# lasers” at an early age, I picked it back up years later and I loved it. Couldn’t put it down. Funny how that works. It quickly became a favorite of mine, and I truly believe it could make a good movie one day.

The intuitive reader could garner from that last sentence that I’m not a fan of David Lych’s 1984 film adaptation. They’d be right. Way to intuit! Just because a story takes place in a desert setting doesn’t mean that every single thing on the screen needs to be the color of turd. Also, he’s responsible for putting Sting in his underpants and filming it, and that’s not right in any galaxy. I can say all this without fear of being attacked by David Lynch fans because the only person who likes David Lynch’s “Dune” less than me is David Lynch.

Years later, the Sci-Fi channel produced a mini-series based on the book, and although it is technically more accurate in its telling, it’s much more “meh”. It can’t even commit to being awful, and although the story’s closer in it’s details, the acting is blander than Hayden Christensen eating tofu in a white room. It’s definitively mediocre; the Mellow Yellow of sci-fi film adaptations.

So, here we are, 2007, and there are whispers in Hollywood (if you can hear them over the shouts of “Strike!!”) of another possible big screen version being in the works. Seems a director has been interested in the project for quite a while, and since producers have figured that if computers have reset buttons then film franchises must as well, we may get yet another swing at the same story. So who is this mystery director? Who’s the person with the magical film karate to bring this story the cinematic delivery it deserves? That director is…Peter Berg? As in, Peter Winkler Berg, director of Friday Night Lights and that vehicle for The Rock? Really?? If you say so, Hollywood. Admittedly, he also directed Very Bad Things, which I liked a lot, and the newly released The Kingdom, which I haven’t seen, but I just get the feeling this idea may be either a) poor, b) horrible, or c) scorpions-in-your-ass awful. Does he have the chops to make this, or should they even try it again? Sci-fi is a very tricky genre, and things usually end up being either seminal works that triumphantly show the strength and ingenuity of the human spirit, or “The Island”. So, what’s your opinion? Can it be done, or should Hollywood keep their meddling mitts out of Arrakis for good?

Capcom releases Street Fighter IV teaser trailer

After twenty years, Capcom finally manages to count to four in the classic fighting series Street Fighter. After the break view the teaser trailer and ponder at what it all means. The big question looming, “Will this new iteration bring 2D hand drawn sprites or 3D models to the newest chapter of Ken & Ryu?”
